Creative block is the worst thing that could happen to an artist. Experiencing this will definitely delay the artist from producing great results. Here are some ways to prevent and overcome creative blocks. 1. Being afraid of not being able to create something is the main cause of creative blocks. The fear will block any creative ideas you have going on your head. Getting rid of this fear is easy. Just think of the painting as a job and you would need to do it or you’re fired. Ok…maybe that was a wrong suggestion making you think that you’ll be fired might get you more scared. Just think of it as a job that you need to do. 2. To get that drive going again, motivate yourself by painting other items. Copy things if you must, even if you hate the subject matter. This might inspire you more to move on with your own idea. 3. Try to experiment and try out different media. From acrylic to oil, or vice versa. If you’re still not motivated go play crayons with children at prep-school. 4. Search on the web for artists or new artist that could inspire you. Look for artworks that you could get an idea and say to yourself that you could it. 5. Be wild with simple things. Try to think of things in a “what if?” situation. What if I painted a doll sitting on a toilet bowl? Also think about how you could expand the creativeness of your material, subject and style. 6. Don’t be dismayed because everyone suffers from this. This period may be just your mind wanting you to take a break. Your mind must just be ready to move on to a new direction. 7. There are books on creative thinking that will give you a jolt. You can try out kiddy books if you’re becoming desperate. Personally, I think reading comics will give you some creative spirit. I have lots of ideas that I want to paint from reading comics, unfortunately I can’t draw. 8. Maybe its time to change the scenario. You would just need a change of environment to inspire you. Go to a place where you haven’t been before. If you get caught while in a night club, you can use this as an excuse. Bring cameras so that after you have been inspired you can have a picture of what inspired you. 9. Look at your past journals or sketches there might be something there that might inspire you. If you see your old sketch of your boring professor, that picture may inspire you. 10. Look at family albums and look for those candid pictures and unique moments. Try to look for the picture when granny is having a hard time to blow out the candles or dad getting hit while fixing something. 11. Go to a senior citizen place. Their stories are full of inspiration. Just don’t choose that just wants to sleep a lot. 12. If you’re really that desperate, there are classes that will force you to produce in a structured environment.
