We’ve made a list of tips to help you on caring and maintaining the pristine condition of your oil paintings. It would be such a waste if oil paintings are damaged – damage that could have been prevented in the first place.

Careless Handling
There have been numerous cases where oil paintings have been unfortunately damaged just because of careless handling. We want you not to have to experience that so here are a few tips about handling oil paintings. First, is the move a necessary step? As we’re concerned about minimizing the risks of damage done to your oil paintings, we want to know if it’s really necessary for a move to take place.

And if it is…it’s important to remove anything on your body that may later on cause scratches or any other unpleasant effects on your oil paintings. Things like jewelries, pins and belt buckles can cause damage so keep things simple when you’re in the process of moving.

Secondly, handle the oil painting on both sides. It would help if there are two of you around so each corner is held securely as you move it to its new location. Never ever hold the oil painting just by the wire attached to it or by grasping only one side of it. Remember, we’re after CAREFUL handling here. And please avoid having the oil painting bumped against anything at all costs! Even the smallest of bumps may spell future doom for your oil painting.

Professional Cleaning
If you can afford it, it’s really better to let the professionals take over the job and have them clean the oil painting. Oil paintings are truly fragile and quite difficult to clean so if you want to minimize the risk of damage, do spend a bit for cleaning charges. Anyway, if you keep the room containing the oil paintings regularly clean, you can lessen the need for professional cleaning.

Insect Infestation
You know how insects in general love dark and dank places. That can be used to describe the conditions at the back of any painting. A number of insects can damage both the frame and the canvas itself so make it a habit to check your oil paintings for insect infestation. If by chance, the oil painting shows signs of infestation, do have an expert take a look at it and see what he can advise you to lessen further damage.

No Smoking
Think of it as killing two birds with one stone. You knew you had to quit one day, anyway, didn’t you? Well, now’s the time to do it. Smoking can cause nicotine to attach itself to the surface of oil paintings and consequently make the drawing obscure.
